What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle when it is manufactured. The VIN acts as a fingerprint for your vehicle — no two vehicles have the same VIN. It encodes the manufacturer, vehicle attributes, model year, assembly plant, and a unique serial number.

Where to find your VIN

  • Driver's side dashboard (visible through windshield)
  • Driver's side door jamb sticker
  • Vehicle registration and title documents
  • Insurance card or policy

How VIN decoding works

Each position in the 17-character VIN represents specific information. Characters 1-3 identify the manufacturer (World Manufacturer Identifier). Characters 4-8 describe vehicle attributes like body type, engine, and transmission. Character 9 is a check digit for validation. Character 10 indicates the model year. Character 11 identifies the assembly plant. Characters 12-17 are the sequential production number.
